Environment, in computing
Blogpost by Joonas Laitinen, Technical Account Manager, Nextron Finland.
Well, we all know that machines get obsolete faster than ever before. It leads to many kinds of waste. That is rather sad. Who does not have drawers full of old cell phones that either have broken display, or are so old, that they barely function?
In the world of computing, there are some other issues as well. Namely, that some home computers (and even workstations) come with a keyboard and a mouse, and those “free” accessories are rarely used. Imagine, if you are buying workstation, that costs €2000-25000, are you going to use those accessories that are worth €2? That would be roughly the same user experience as using the newest iPhone with keyboard of Nokia 3110. That’s why we (and Supermicro in general) do not ship those “free” accessories with our computers. That actually saves you money, and it also saves the environment, since there is no waste included in the package.
What about the computers and servers themselves? What degrades (or goes obsolete) in computers? That’s the insides. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the chassis of your computer. Still, your company probably throws old servers to trash, completely. That’s quite big waste of natural resources. That’s why Supermicro actually provides ability to only change the insides of your machine. For servers, that is quite new and interesting feature! It is actually cheaper, since you don’t have to buy new chassis, and it is more friendly towards the whole planet.
